On the 18th of April, Soul Surf Project Bali, organized an art workshop for the orphans of Widhya Asih 1 from Denpasar together with artist Rae Vavra. Rae works as a volunteer for this project and gives surf yoga and art lessons to the orphans. Besides making paintings, Rae also creates art on used surfboards, using a mix of paint, graffiti and surf photos.
In previous art workshops the kids could make collage paintings and create their own design on t-shirts. This time the kids had the opportunity to make art on old donated surfboards using their own surf pictures. They learned different techniques, like using spray paint in a creative way, how to mix the different colors of paint, etc. But most of all, they had a lot of fun with painting the boards and painting themselves! Their surf art will be sold by lottery during the “Epic Indo” art show of Rae Vavra on the 7th of May in Black Dog Bar (from 19.00-23.30 hrs). All proceeds from this lottery will be used for the development of soul surf project Bali. Furthermore Rae will donate 25% of the proceeds of the sold paintings to the foundation.
The orphans made two pieces of art on surfboards that day, one for the lottery and one for themselves, to hang in their orphanage.
Soul Surf Project Bali helps the underprivileged orphans of Bali to conquer the best waves in the world by providing surf lessons. When the children are surfing they are surrounded by the elements of nature and enjoying it! They learn to appreciate the beauty of the ocean.
To reinforce this respect for nature, the kids are educated about the environment, how they can help to make Bali a better and cleaner place to live and encourage them to stand up for Mother Nature! The environmental lessons (including beach cleanups) are an important part of the program of Soul Surf Project Bali as pollution is a serious problem and the environmental awareness is still very low.

The kids get their extensive surf lessons from professionals and have the ability to grow in the sport of surfing by creating opportunities for young surf talents. On a regular basis the kids can also participate in making art (inspired by what they learned in the program) to stimulate their creativity and teach them new skills.
